Editorial Portrait - Vic Kusaka for Vancouver Foundation
Excited to have had the opportunity to work on this portrait with Vancouver Foundation and Alice Cho (Art Direction + Design) back in the summer.
Dinner en Blanc 2024
I was recently invited by my friend and peer, Jayme Dunn Photo, to come out with her to Dinner en Blanc Vancouver. I had always heard of this event but never really read into it or took interest as I don’t own very many white clothing.
Press Photos for Queer as Funk
It’s any creative’s dream to be able to have the freedom to come up with concepts for clients.
Moving Coffee Brand Session
Coffee used to be something that I consumed just to "wake up". Over the years, my appreciation for good coffee has come from friends and clients who share a greater passion for the drink.
Ricoh GRIII / Small but mighty
As photographers, we love geeking out on gear. We get excited about that new camera launch, or that gadget that can help level up our work.
Welcome 2024
Adding to my themes this year is “Automation”. As business and technology change, sometimes I spend a year or two with new tools and software and fail to use the features that are meant to make my life easier.
Cedar Coast Brand Session
I had the pleasure of working with Angie of Cedar Coast Yoga this year.
We photographed a 2 part brand photography session which incorporated both an administrative professional and an outdoor look for her Yoga Therapy business.
Snippets of my past
When we were back in Singapore in 2016, I had begun reflecting on my heritage, my family history and story. I had this feeling that this would be one of the last opportunities to ask questions.
The Diverse Photographer
When I started out my career in photography, I was told to find my niche. Figure out what I was good at and what made me special. I searched for just that. Back then I was shooting weddings and after 8 years, I finally got it. I knew I was drawn to a reportage style of wedding and family photography. I knew my why. I figured it all out. At least I thought I did.
Books that keep me inspired
I hate reading. I’m not great at it. I skim over words, get lost and confused and then have to re-read paragraphs over and over.
But in recent years, I discovered e-Books and I am now able to consume them in a much more efficient way.
5 ways to improve your portrait photography
Whether using your phone or a camera, the principals and rules for improving your portrait photography are similar.
Crimson Eco Garden + Local Eats
When I chatted with Sarah about doing brand photos for her business, I knew this was a shoot that was right down my alley. Crimson Eco Garden & Local Eats offers services workshops and coaching in gardening and food preparation & preservation.
My 5 minutes
My job brings me to some pretty cool places. I’ve worked in collaboration with Brett Hitchins (Brett Ryan Studios) over the last few years and we’ve photographed gorgeous homes, beautiful interiors and some pretty rad people doing what they love.
Pixel the studio pup
My home studio is equipped with backdrops, lighting and nice natural back space for small projects, headshots and product photography.
The studio also comes with it’s own studio puppy, Pixel!
Creative ruts and how I embrace them
For me, creative ruts happen when I am overworked or when I come down from something exciting that has happened in my life. It also happens when I’ve been doing the same things in my life over and over with no change in scenery. We ebb and flow, our energy rises and falls and there’s a balance that needs to happen for one or the other feelings and states to exist.
Your photographer
For those new here, I'm Jamie. I've been a professional photographer for 13 years now. My career started after graduating from Film School here in Vancouver.
My 2023 Gear
I remember when I bought my Canon 5Diii. It was the first time I was able to afford this upgrade to a full-frame DSLR from my Canon 7D that my dad had helped me purchase when I was starting out in my career. At the time I did not have enough credit and my bank only allowed me something like $500 to spend on my debit card (It was that long ago!). I ended up having to withdraw cash to purchase it. So there I was, walking across the street from the bank to the camera store with $5000 cash in my pocket to buy my first camera on my own.
Welcome 2023
Every year, I like to give myself a theme instead of a resolution. When the rules are too rigid and goals set far too high, it’s hard to keep at it, especially when things start to speed up and get busy in the middle to later parts of the year.
